Regular cleanings are non-invasive and are the cornerstone of preventive dentistry. The cleaning removes the buildup of bacteria and calculus that accumulates between the teeth and above the gums. However, if you have plaque and tartar buildup below the gum line that has caused gum disease, Dr. Thomas will recommend a deep cleaning.

Scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleaning, is a procedure involving the removal of plaque and calculus from between the teeth and below the gums. that is causing infection and bone loss.
You may notice some signs of infection requiring deep cleaning. Your gums may look red and swollen, may be tender, and bleed when you brush or floss. Also, your teeth may look longer than they used to. This is a sign that your gums are pulling away from your teeth.
